CAMPAIGN LAUNCH “WE NEED OUR HEAD EXAMINED”

Jun 16, 2016

“We Need Our Heads Examined”, a campaign led by the Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI) and supported by fifteen of its members, is calling on the Government to tackle the critical shortage of rehabilitation services for people with neurological conditions.
There is a dire shortage of rehabilitation services in Ireland for the 25,000 people with neurological conditions each year who need them. Without rehabilitation, people suffer preventable disabilities, cannot return to work and young people are forced to live in nursing homes because there is nowhere else for them to go.

The campaign is calling for immediate action on rehabilitation services after a decade of broken promises which has seen no investment and no progress despite the publication of a National Neurorehabilitation Strategy in 2011.

See article highlighting the comments of Dr Mark Delargy, Clinical Director of the National Rehabilitation Hospital, at the launch who noted that “Not everyone who needs to can access vital specialist rehabilitation in a hospital setting, and when they are discharged, they often receive little or no additional supports in the community. For many, there is no other option than to be inappropriately placed in a nursing home with little chance of gaining any independence.”
