COMMENCEMENT OF MOVE (MINDFULNESS ONLINE & VIRTUAL EXERCISE FOR CHRONIC PAIN) PROGRAMME

Feb 23, 2021

Chronic Pain Ireland’s members signed up for this programme during January 2021.  For those who were deemed eligible, they are now taking part  in the MOVE (Mindfulness Online & Virtual Exercise for Chronic Pain).  This is an online trial of a newly developed 8-week programme for people with chronic pain. It has been developed by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals at University College Dublin and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital as part of ongoing research into the use of mindfulness and exercise in the management of chronic pain.

Over 100 members of Chronic Pain Ireland applied. Those who were eligible to take part have been split into two groups as follows:

  • Group 1 take part in live online mindfulness (MBSR) and exercise sessions for up to 3 hours per week for 8 weeks. (Group 1)
  • Group 2 given access to online material with the goal of assisting in the self management of chronic pain.  (Group 2)

What is this research about & why is it being conducted?
In the current climate, there is a need to investigate the effectiveness an online group pain management programme for chronic pain as currently many of the outpatient group pain programmes across the country have ceased. In this study we will compare the effectiveness of a group based
combined Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) intervention and exercise to a selfadministered online guide for the self-management of chronic pain. The outcome of the study will help in better understanding the effectiveness of delivering a pain programme for individuals with
chronic pain online.

Chronic Pain Ireland looks forward to the findings of this study later in the year.
