Cauda Equina Community Event

Chronic Pain Ireland (CPI) was honoured to be invited as a guest speaker at a recent Spinal Injuries Ireland, Athlone community meeting addressing Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES), a rare but serious condition that requires urgent medical attention and long-term support. The event brought people together for an afternoon of learning, sharing, and community connection.

As part of the panel, CPI’s Niamh Walsh, a psychotherapist, led a workshop on “Living with Hidden Pain and Disability.” The workshop highlighted the daily challenges people face when living with chronic pain such as feeling alone , exhausted and unsupported. Niamh provided education about understanding pain, connecting with emotions, cognitive distortions, calming the nervous system and the importance of community.

Other expert speakers gave valuable presentations on topics central to life with Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES), including bowel and bladder management, legal resources, and practical support. These sessions provided attendees with important tools and knowledge to help manage the complex realities of living with CES.

Beyond the formal presentations, the community meeting created a supportive and welcoming space for people to meet, chat, and share their lived experiences. It gave individuals the chance to learn from one another, reduce feelings of isolation, and build connections with others facing similar challenges. Importantly, it also offered family members and loved ones an opportunity to gain deeper insight into the complexities of Cauda Equina Syndrome, fostering greater empathy and understanding.

CPI is committed to supporting people living with invisible conditions like chronic pain and CES, and we are proud to collaborate with other organisations to raise awareness and strengthen community support. Events like this demonstrate the power of bringing people together to share knowledge, create understanding, and advocate for better care.
