Participant Information Sheet

Study Title: Physiotherapists and patients views on online exercise classes during the Covid-19 Pandemic. 

You are invited to take part in a research study that aims to determine the views of Irish Physiotherapists and patients towards physiotherapy-led online exercise classes. Thank you for taking the time to read this information leaflet, before you decide whether or not you wish to take part, you should read the information provided below carefully.

Who is carrying out this study? This study is being conducted by Eimear Cronin, a senior Physiotherapist in the Benbulben Rehabilitation Unit at St. John’s Hospital, Sligo and a PhD candidate at Atlantic Technological University Sligo, under the supervision of Dr. Ken Monaghan.

Why am I being asked to take part? You are being asked to take part in this study if you are an adult who has attended any physiotherapy-led online or virtual exercise class. What is the purpose of the study? This study aims to discover your views of the physiotherapy-led online exercise class that you attended.

What will your participation involve? If you decide to participate, you will be asked to complete a survey containing mostly closedended questions (box ticking) and a few open-ended questions, where you are asked to leave a comment. You will be asked questions regarding your sociodemographic details and your satisfaction, safety and comfort during the online exercise class. You will also be asked what you felt were the advantages and disadvantages of this form of exercise class.

What are the potential benefits or risks? Your contribution will not benefit you directly, however, your opinion is valued and the results of the survey when collated and published, may help physiotherapiststo improve the delivery of online exercise classes for future participants. There are no known risks to your participation in this study. You are free to stop at any point and withdraw immediately without completing the survey.

Are you free to withdraw from the study? Participation in this research project is completely voluntary. You have the right to refuse participation. Once you have agreed to complete the survey you are free to withdraw at any time. However, after submission, the survey cannot be withdrawn.

Confidentiality – who will know I am taking part in the research study? No one will know you are taking part. The survey is completely anonymous so the researchers will not be able to identify you. Group level data from this study will be used in reports, conference abstracts and potentially a scientific publication. Your identity will not be revealed at any point. All information you provide will be treated with strict privacy and anonymity at all times, adhering to all GDPR guidelines.

Who has approved the study? The Research Ethics Committee at Sligo University Hospital has approved this study
