Notice Sligo Pain Clinic – Temporary Closure
Sligo University Hospital Chronic Pain Unit – Update as of June 26 2024
Chronic Pain Ireland is monitoring the news that the Sligo University Hospital Chronic Pain Unit will close on Friday 28th June 2024 due to the current consultants moving to new roles. Assurances have been given by Saolta that the closure of Sligo University Hospital’s Chronic Pain Unit is temporary.
According to reporting by Ocean FM alternative arrangements are being put in place for patients currently attending the service. Appointments will be offered at Kingsbridge Sligo for procedures, and outsourcing options with the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) are being explored, as an interim measure and until new consultants are recruited.
Additionally, a locum consultant will commence next month to oversee the governance of the Pain Management and Education program, a psychologically-based rehabilitative treatment for people with persistent pain.
Chronic Pain Ireland welcomes the news that the Sligo Pain Clinic will not be closing permanently but hopes the recruitment of new consultants will be expedited and the continuation of the crucial services it provides will not be interrupted and cause undue stress to people living with chronic pain in Sligo and the northwest.
The Sligo Pain Clinic is a vital pain clinic treating thousands of patients. It is the only public pain clinic that covers the entire northwest of the country.
Our thanks to Marian Harkin Independent TD for Sligo, Leitrim, North Roscommon, Leitrim and South Donegal who also raised this matter during Leaders Questions with the Tánaiste Micheal Martin TD yesterday, Thursday 27th June and we will be monitoring this situation. Watch back here
